In this project, our crew is tearing off an existing torch down roofing system and bringing the roof down to the plywood so the deck can be properly inspected and prepared for the new installation.

What goes underneath metal siding before the panels are installed?
In this video, our PM walks through an important part of the installation process: high-temperature ice & water shield.
Metal panels can absorb and accumulate significant heat, so using a high-temperature membrane beneath the panels provides an additional layer of protection for the surface underneath.
From there, the crew begins laying out and installing the metal panels, bringing the finished exterior one step closer to completion.
The finished product may be what catches your eye, but the preparation underneath is an important part of getting the installation right. Good exterior work starts with the details you don’t always see.

Small details make a big difference in metal work.
On the side of our warehouse, these metal panels have been carefully notched and hemmed backward at 180 degrees to create a standing-seam, non-exposed-fastener panel.
The result is a clean exterior finish without visible fasteners across the face of the panel. It takes precise cuts, careful bends, and the right tools to get the detail just right.
This is a great example of the craftsmanship that goes into the exterior of a building, even in the details you might not notice at first glance.

• Massive granule loss with fiberglass showing through
• Missing starter metal, leaving the plywood more exposed to moisture
• Exposed fasteners
• Missing sealant where it’s needed
These might seem like small details individually, but they can tell you a lot about the condition and installation of a roofing system. Once the protective granules are gone and the fiberglass is exposed, the shingles have lost an important part of their protective surface. And when roof edges, fasteners, and penetrations aren’t properly detailed, water has more opportunities to find its way into the system.
The biggest takeaway? Don’t judge a roof only by what it looks like from the ground. Some of the most important warning signs are in the details.

When bad weather is on the way, how a roofing crew approaches the job matters.
On this project, the crew knew the weather could turn, so instead of tearing off the entire house at once, they worked in sections. Half of the roof was torn off and shingled, while the other half remained protected until the weather passed.
Tomorrow, the crew can continue the tear-off on the remaining section and keep the project moving.
Roofing isn’t just about installing shingles. It’s also about planning the work around the conditions, protecting the home, and making smart decisions throughout the project.
