The 6 Layers of a Roof

Ever wonder what goes into a roof? This is how we build them.

1. Decking

  • Decking is the base layer between your trusses and the roof.
  • It can be a variety of materials most commonly plywood or OSB, wood tongue and groove, or ship-lap.

2. Starter Strip

  • Starter strip shingles are a strip of shingles that line every edge of the roof of your house.
  • They come after the decking and before the underlayment.

We use Malarkey roofing products:

  • The first row of shingles fortifies the rest. Made with NEX® Polymer Modified Asphalt and high-grade, rubberized adhesive for exceptional seal-down, Smart Start M starter shingles provide increased wind protection at the eave and rake edges of the roof.
  • Incorporating upcycled tires and plastic bags to increase strength and durability, while reducing landfill waste, Malarkey starter shingles are designed with the environment in mind.
  • Smart Start TM is larger in size than standard shingles, and is adhered with rubberized adhesive to provide exceptional seal-down and wind protection at the eave and rake edges of the roof.

3. Underlayment

  • Underlayment prevents wind-driven rain and water from making its’ way under your shingles and causing damage to your roof or the inside of your home.
  • Ice and water shield can be placed in water-prone areas for an extra layer of protection.
  • Malarkey makes Arctic Seal®, a durable, waterproof, self-adhering underlayment made for areas of the roof most susceptible to leaks. Arctic Seal® can also be used as a high-performance, all-roof underlayment. (Pictured below)

4. Shingles/Metal Roofing

  • Shingles come in a wide variety of styles and colors depending on whether you go with metal roofing or traditional shingles.
  • See our post on metal roofing

5. Ridge Caps/Vents

    • A ridge cap fits over the joint at the ridgeline to keep rain and snow out of the home. It also helps to finish off the look of the roof by creating a tightly sealed joint along the two sides.

  • For an efficient roofing system, it’s essential that the attic stay dry and cool. You can create this environment by usingOwens Corning VentSure® 4′ Rigid Strip Externally Baffled Ridge Ventsin combination with under eave soffit vents.
  • Together they allow the natural flow of outside air up into the attic—and back out again. Without this system, moisture can reduce the effectiveness of your insulation, causing rotting or mildew on wood surfaces, drywall damage, peeling paint, or warped siding.

6. Flashings

  • Metal flashings like these are designed to keep water and moisture out of more prone areas to leakage.
  • These include gables, eaves, and other joints where water might get in. (Pictured below)
