A roof protects a family from the rain. A warm, safe home gives people a place to rest, grow, and build their lives. But taking care of a community means looking beyond the homes themselves. It means paying attention to the people inside them, especially the children who deserve the chance to grow up feeling supported.
That’s one of the reasons Integrity Roofing & Construction is proud to partner with Bremerton Backpack Brigade.
This local nonprofit works to address weekend food insecurity for children in the Bremerton community. During the school year, volunteers prepare backpacks filled with food and deliver them to local elementary schools, helping students have nutritious options to eat when school meals are not available.
It’s a simple idea with a meaningful purpose: children should not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from when the school week ends.
The organization’s work reaches far beyond packing food. It brings together volunteers, school staff, local businesses, and donors who recognize a need in their community and choose to help meet it. That kind of shared effort is something we value deeply at Integrity.
We spend our days helping homeowners protect their properties, but we are just as proud of opportunities to support the people and organizations working to make our communities stronger. Our partnership with Bremerton Backpack Brigade is one way we can help care for our neighbors beyond the roof over their heads.
Helping Bremerton’s Children Start Monday Ready to Learn
For many children, school provides a dependable source of meals throughout the week. When Friday afternoon arrives, though, that support can look different. Families facing financial hardship may have to stretch a limited grocery budget across the weekend, and that can leave children without reliable access to enough nutritious food.
Bremerton Backpack Brigade exists to help fill that gap.
The organization began in 2010 after a teacher at Naval Avenue Elementary School noticed students taking extra food from the cafeteria. Recognizing that some children needed additional support outside school hours, she and her team began sending backpacks of food home with students. A similar effort at another Bremerton elementary school later joined the initiative, helping form the nonprofit that serves the community today.
The need was clear, and the response was practical. Instead of treating weekend hunger as something families had to navigate on their own, the program created a way for the community to help.
Today, Bremerton Backpack Brigade works with Bremerton School District staff to determine how many backpacks are needed at participating schools. The food is then prepared and delivered so students can take it home for the weekend. The organization also considers siblings in a student’s household, helping ensure the food provided accounts for other children at home.
That detail matters. Food insecurity does not affect just one person in a household, and support is more useful when it reflects what families actually need.
The purpose is not to replace a family’s grocery supply. It’s to provide additional food during a time when access to school meals is unavailable and household resources may be stretched thin.
By helping children return to school on Monday with their basic nutritional needs better supported, Bremerton Backpack Brigade is helping create a stronger foundation for learning, participation, and well-being.

The People and Effort Behind Every Backpack
A backpack filled with food may look simple when it reaches a student, but a great deal of coordination happens before it gets there.
Bremerton Backpack Brigade is entirely volunteer-run. Its program depends on people who are willing to give their time to prepare food, organize supplies, assemble backpacks, and help get them to local schools.
The process begins with communication between the organization and school staff. Those staff members see students regularly and understand where additional support may be needed. They provide weekly counts so the Brigade can prepare the appropriate number of backpacks.
Then the volunteers get to work.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are washed, cut, and portioned. Other food items are organized to create practical meal and snack options. On pack-out days, volunteers assemble the backpacks and prepare them for delivery to Bremerton’s elementary schools.
The contents vary depending on available food, but the organization describes a typical backpack as including items such as pasta, canned tuna, macaroni and cheese, chili, fruit, and vegetables.
Each step requires time, planning, and people who are willing to show up consistently. Food needs to be sourced, supplies need to be organized, and deliveries need to reach the right schools. The program works because volunteers and community supporters continue contributing to the process.
There is also an important element of dignity in the way the program operates. School staff distribute the backpacks directly to students who need them, helping maintain their privacy. Receiving assistance should not mean a child has to feel singled out in front of classmates.
That thoughtful approach is part of what makes the program meaningful. It recognizes that children need food, but they also deserve to feel included and supported.
The Brigade’s work is a reminder that community care often happens through a series of small, repeated actions. A volunteer preparing produce may never meet the student who receives that food. A donor may never see a backpack delivered. Yet each contribution helps make the program possible.
Why Integrity Is Proud to Support Bremerton Backpack Brigade
At Integrity Roofing & Construction, our work is built around protecting homes and the people who depend on them. A roof needs to do more than look good from the street. It needs to help keep water out, protect the structure beneath it, and stand up to the weather our region brings.
We take that responsibility seriously. But we also know that a strong community depends on more than well maintained homes.
Families need safe housing, access to food, supportive schools, and organizations that step in when life gets difficult. Local nonprofits often do important work that would otherwise fall to families already trying to manage a lot. They bring people together, respond to needs, and provide support that can make a real difference in someone’s day-to-day life.
Bremerton Backpack Brigade is doing that work for children and families right here in the community.
We are proud to support an organization that has built a practical response to weekend hunger and continues to rely on local people to keep it going. Its work is grounded in the idea that children deserve the opportunity to learn and grow without hunger getting in the way.
That is a mission worth supporting.
Our community partnerships also give us a chance to connect with the people and organizations that make the places we serve special. We do not want community involvement to be limited to putting our name on a sponsorship or sharing a post online. We want to understand what our partners do, recognize the needs they are addressing, and find meaningful ways to contribute.
Every organization has a different purpose, and every community has different needs. Supporting a nonprofit that helps children access food is one way we can contribute beyond our day-to-day work in roofing and construction.
We are grateful for the volunteers, school staff, donors, and community partners who make Bremerton Backpack Brigade’s work possible. Their continued commitment helps turn a weekly routine of preparing and delivering food into something much bigger: a community showing children that people are looking out for them.

Building Stronger Communities Beyond the Roof
Our connection to the community does not end when a roofing project is complete.
We work with homeowners throughout the Puget Sound region, including the Bremerton area. We help people make decisions about roofs, siding, gutters, decks, and other exterior projects that protect and improve their homes. Sometimes that means addressing an immediate problem, and sometimes it means helping a homeowner plan ahead before a small concern becomes a larger one.
Those projects matter because homes matter. They are where families gather, children grow, and everyday life happens.
But a home is also part of a larger neighborhood. The strength of that neighborhood depends on people looking out for one another and supporting the organizations that help meet local needs.
That is why we make community involvement a meaningful part of who we are. We are proud to support nonprofits, participate in local events, and build relationships with organizations doing important work throughout the region.
Bremerton Backpack Brigade is a great example of what can happen when a community recognizes a need and decides to work together. Volunteers contribute their time, school staff help identify students who need support, and local donors and businesses help provide the resources to keep the program running.
We are glad to play a part in that effort.
